Subject: [Harp-L] Re: Modes, keys and positions/Summertime on Chromatic

Richard writes of Summertime:

"And of course, you can always use a chromatic harp, where you just find
the notes and play them. In my opinion, ballads like "Summertime" are
justification enough for learning to play chromatic harp. Chromatics just tear
it up on ballads. If you want to see them cry, play a ballad on the
chromatic.

Regards, Richard Hunter"

YAY! <G> someone like me has been waiting for a primarily diatonic
player to say this for SO long. Summertime especially is just gorgeous on a
Chromatic...so are other songs like Georgia, Misty, Mona Lisa,
Unforgettable....and he couldn't be 'righter'. Even me, whom I'd still classify as a
decided amateur have seen a few friends now surreptitiously wipe away some of
the 'Tracks of their tears', after having heard me playing some very
personal and 'connected' ballads at family gatherings. Danny Boy's another good
one designed to make the tears flow. And no, they weren't tears of pain ;)

Just one wee small mention Richard might not already know: Jason Ricci used
to play Summertime on diatonic and I very much enjoyed his
version...about as seamless on a diatonic as I'd ever heard.Yet, he played a gig in one
particular neighbourhood of Florida once. Invited a friend up. They played
Summertime together...the other guy on Chromatic. Afterwards Jason declared
(on the friend's YouTube video which had been posted there by Garry Hodgson
of this list):

"Now all can see why I finally retired this tune after having Joe sit in
and do it...I just decidedï he was the heavy weight champ of this song!
Gorgeous, Mesmorizing, Brilliant, Soulful,Technical. Thanks again Gary!"

...Here it is as played at Buckeye 2007(and videotaped by Danny G) for
anyone not yet privy to it:(keep in mind the translation from one computer to
another made it sound a little 'bubbly')
